Designing Your First Model Railroad Layout

Constructing your first model railroad layout is a multitude of arts combined into one: history, photography, sculpting, painting, carpentry, airbrushing, terrain, building and electrical engineering merge together into an art-form comprised of many intricate details working together. Such a hobby may provide many hours of fun for you and your loved ones, regardless if you have had past experience with design and construction or even whether or not you have much of an art background. Moreover, many people take constructing model railroads from a simple hobby to a passion, shared with family, friends, and passed down to future generations.

If you've never built any sort of models before, designing your first model railroad layout is pretty systematic once you have a plan and figure out a few details. Here are a few aspects you will need to plan ahead before you get started:

1.) Start with the basics. Before you begin building your model railroad layout, you will need to figure out how much space you are willing to devote to your project. You will also need to determine the scale your model will be using, or the ratio between the measurement of the model compared to the prototype. In other words, you'll need to know what size and type of trains are realistically compatible in the space allotted. Some models are more expensive than others, so look around at different railroad layouts and determine how much you are willing to spend.

2.) What is the theme of your railroad? Whether your layout design is inspired by the WWII era or is a miniature reenactment of the 1920s, decide a theme for your railroad that you will use consistently. Which eras of history inspire you? Whichever decade you decide, you will need to choose scenery and towns accordingly in order to give your model railroad layout an accurate historical feel. For instance, if your model railroad is in a desert setting, you may want to go with Union Pacific locomotives; you may choose to model your layout exactly like a historical town, or you may simply create the look and feel to give a sense of where your trains are.

3.) What is the purpose of your railroad? Trains are never operated just for the sake of it, so it's important to establish where your trains are going. Will they transport coal to power companies? Milk to dairy farms? How about transporting passengers from one town to another? Decide exactly what your trains will be doing so you'll have a concrete idea to build on.

4.) What time of year is this? The scenery you choose for your model railroad layout blends nature with machinery, beauty with industrialization. Whatever trees, mountains, terrain, bridges, tunnels and foliage you use will have a tremendous impact on your railroad and make the whole scene come alive. Of course, be sure to select scenery that will portray the theme and locale of your model, and enhance, not overwhelm, the senses.

You can buy figurines and materials needed for your model railroad layout at any hobby store to get your railroad going. Once you get familiar with the designing and building, you may even like to start handcrafting models yourself. In the beginning though, it's best to start small and build your skill so you do not get bogged down by the minute details.
