Website Blunders - Do Not Put "Under Construction"

When you are getting ready to open your Internet website avoid sending users to the site before it is ready. Using the "under construction" front page gives potential customers a poor image of your business. They may think that you are not in business or that you went bankrupt. The use of the "under construction" page can undermine your credibility and cause people to give your business a bad reputation.

Another problem with using the "under construction" page is that you will potentially harm your inclusion in search engines. This could cause long-lasting problems when you are ready to open your web business.

Instead of using these types of signs opt for placing your web site on line immediately. If you are unprepared to put the site up you should wait to get your site until you are ready. Any web site is better than none. So if you must start using your site you can at least put up a banner or abbreviated web site that can give more information about your business. Give a clear statement about what your business does and let the users know a little about your background and when the full site will become available. Use some keywords in your short site and make it similar in style and color to what your full-blown site will look like.

Better yet is to be prepared with your website as soon as you get it. You can easily prepare your website ahead of time so it just needs to be downloaded when the time comes. There are many web site programs that can be used. If you are unfamiliar with using them you may want to enlist the help of a qualified web site designer. They can help you choose a layout, colors, navigation and graphics. They will help you determine the best links to use and what content to put on the site. Some will even supply professionally written copy for inclusion on your site. Using a professional will help to ensure that all the links work and that the site doesn't take too long to load.

To make sure that you don't get stuck with an "under construction" sign talk to your website host company. Ask them not to mark the site as active until a specific date that you agree to. That way you can have time to design your web site before taking it online. Be open to changes. Once your site is active always test it to be sure that all the links work properly.
