"PRS" Ireland "Neoweb" Unpaved Forestry Harvest Road Over Saturated Deep Peat
THE CHALLENGE - An unpaved road was required over deep upland-peat soils in the in a remote mountainous location in the South West of Ireland. The existing peat has poor bearing capacity and heavier than average rainfall during 2008 meant it was very saturated. The ground would not carry the 45-tonne vehicles required for harvest haulage. We were required to build a cost effective access road across this area using locally dug, poor quality stone which would be capable of supporting these loadings under frequent passes for its 40 year lifespan. THE PRS NEOWEB™ SOLUTION - Initial concerns were expressed by the Client regarding the ability of the saturated peat (min 3m deep) to support even their specialized tracked excavators. To overcome this, Neoweb™ was placed directly on top of the non-woven Geotextile and in-filled in front of the machine as it progressed forward, allowing the haulage vehicles to deliver their payload in a continuous stream behind on a depth of construction as shallow as 250mm. Due to site layout restrictions, a progress rate of approx 80 linear meters was achieved but the potential could be as high as 200+ linear meters per day.
