Need Layout Advice? Very Awkward Kitchen Location/Design

The following are common questions Kitchen Designers are asked:

Where is the best place to put the refrigerator?

It is best to put the refrigerator at the end of a countertop run or next to a pantry. It is "best practice" to have your pantry at the end of a countertop also. This way you are not walking around it to get to the other side of the countertop and having a broken up workspace. If possible, try to recess your refrigerator 3 inches into the wall or buy a counter depth refrigerator. Remember however counter depth refrigerators are more expensive and usually taller. You probably will need to increase the width to get enough storage.

Can I put an island in my kitchen?

Most people look at magazines and go online to get ideas before doing renovations on their homes. Unfortunately, most good photographs of kitchens are for bigger kitchens and they show great islands and much more. An island is a nice idea and can give much needed counter space. However, if you have to walk around it to get to all the appliances or it disturbs the natural flow of the kitchen then it is not recommended. You will need about 36 inches between the island and other countertops, appliances or walls. If not it will be crammed.

What is the "work triangle" and do I need it?

The work triangle dates back to the 1950's. It basically optimizes the triangle formed by the 3 main kitchen appliances--- sink, range and refrigerator. The idea is to reduce the walking distance while preparing food. Each side of the triangle should be 4 to 9 feet max and not more than 26 feet when adding all 3 sides. Of course in small kitchen designs, with straight wall layouts, this is not possible as can be seen in a lot of Manhattan like apartments.

How do I get more storage or counter space?

Again changing the layout probably will help the most here. If you are using a wall oven you really need to ask yourself if it is necessary. Simply taking a wall oven out will have a big impact on both counter space and storage. Today you can get convection microwaves that may be all the extra oven capacity you need. Use frameless cabinets that give better access and also make the drawers wider. If your cabinets are going up to the ceiling it may not be necessary to have a pantry.

In closing, Changing the layout of your kitchen can improve the flow and function of the kitchen. It can give more storage and counter top space and of course make the kitchen look bigger. Simple changes like eliminating pantries and wall ovens if they are not necessary will have a big impact.

How To Measure For a Kitchen Cabinet Layout Design

There are many factors to consider when you are planning a kitchen cabinet layout design. For instance, if you are remodeling your old kitchen, you will need to measure the space you have. How do you do that? You will need at least two people to measure a room correctly for your kitchen cabinet layout design.

One person should hold the end of the tape measure, while the other person pulls the other end tightly. You don't want the tape to sag or bend as this will give you incorrect measurements and you will regret it after you realize your kitchen cabinet layout design has been ruined because nothing fits correctly. Use a professional tape measure to ensure the right measurements.

When you measure, be sure you include every detail. It is essential that you measure the entire perimeter including walls that won't have cabinets. In order to eliminate any planning problems, the planner needs to create a precise blueprint of the entire room. Begin measuring on your left and work towards the right. First measure the entire wall's length, you should then go back and measure each item that is on the wall. Do not begin to measure another wall, until you are done measuring all objects on the wall you are currently measuring. To be absolutely sure your measurements are correct, swap ends of the tape measure with your partner. Let them read the measurements to be certain you have the same figures.

Be sure you measure the next wall end to end. When you measure a window, calculate the width from the outside left edge to the outside right edge. When you measure the height of a window, you measure from the outside top edge to the outside bottom edge. You will need to measure from the floor to the bottom edge of the window and from the ceiling to the top of the window edge. Do not leave any items or objects out when you are measuring. Include things like baseboard heat or heating vents. When you are done measuring all walls, you should be back to where you began. Avoiding errors when you are measuring for your kitchen cabinet layout design will save you from making a costly mistake when ordering your kitchen cabinets.
