Scrapbook Layout Ideas

Scrapbooks are a personal expression to remember an event or serious of events through photos and other memorabilia. Just as each person has different experiences, so each book is different. With this in mind, scrappers can spend hours of time devoted to creating beautiful pages to capture a single moment or event. The joy of the craft is not only with the finished project but in remembering the event as the page is being created. With that in mind, many scrapbookers will search for the perfect layout to compliment their photos. Scrapbook layout ideas can come from many sources. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Decide which photo and other mementos you want to include in the page. Look at the objects and decide what overall feeling you want to create. If the picture is of a little one sleeping, you won't want a loud page. Instead find a theme that will compliment the story you are trying to tell. Once you've decided on the overall theme, look for objects, pictures, colors, and other items that will coordinate with your theme. Gather odds and ends to the side that you would like to use. These can be buttons, cut outs, photo borders, ticket stubs, stickers, ribbon, and yarn, almost anything. Once you've gathered all of your items decide how you want them laid out. The idea is to compliment the photographs and other important objects, not to overwhelm them. Sure all those cute Holiday stickers might look nice, but if there are placed all on one page the focus is no longer on the photos but on the stickers. Most will agree the less is better, especially in the beginning.

One scrapbook layout idea that you can use is a Holiday theme for making Christmas cookies. Take the photos of family and friends rolling out, decorating, cutting out, and baking Christmas cookies. Look for candid shots. Next take red cardstock and place it on the scrapbook page as the background. Then, use thin dark green ribbon to create a border around the edges of the page. Layer photographs on the page and place the grin ribbon around each for a border. Then take the cookie cutters and trace the shape onto cardstock. Decorate the paper cookies and glue them around the page. You know have an instant page that showcases the tradition of baking cookies. Keep the cookies to just a few to avoid over dominating the page. Depending on the scrapbook page, use only three or four. If you would like to create a two page theme you can add the recipe to a piece of paper and add it to one side and the cookies and photos around it. To give it an authentic look, crumple the paper and rub and crease it over and over to create a well used appearance.

Where is the best place to put the refrigerator?

It is best to put the refrigerator at the end of a countertop run or next to a pantry. It is "best practice" to have your pantry at the end of a countertop also. This way you are not walking around it to get to the other side of the countertop and having a broken up workspace. If possible, try to recess your refrigerator 3 inches into the wall or buy a counter depth refrigerator. Remember however counter depth refrigerators are more expensive and usually taller. You probably will need to increase the width to get enough storage.

Can I put an island in my kitchen?

Most people look at magazines and go online to get ideas before doing renovations on their homes. Unfortunately, most good photographs of kitchens are for bigger kitchens and they show great islands and much more. An island is a nice idea and can give much needed counter space. However, if you have to walk around it to get to all the appliances or it disturbs the natural flow of the kitchen then it is not recommended. You will need about 36 inches between the island and other countertops, appliances or walls. If not it will be crammed.

What is the "work triangle" and do I need it?

The work triangle dates back to the 1950's. It basically optimizes the triangle formed by the 3 main kitchen appliances--- sink, range and refrigerator. The idea is to reduce the walking distance while preparing food. Each side of the triangle should be 4 to 9 feet max and not more than 26 feet when adding all 3 sides. Of course in small kitchen designs, with straight wall layouts, this is not possible as can be seen in a lot of Manhattan like apartments.

How do I get more storage or counter space?

Again changing the layout probably will help the most here. If you are using a wall oven you really need to ask yourself if it is necessary. Simply taking a wall oven out will have a big impact on both counter space and storage. Today you can get convection microwaves that may be all the extra oven capacity you need. Use frameless cabinets that give better access and also make the drawers wider. If your cabinets are going up to the ceiling it may not be necessary to have a pantry.

In closing, Changing the layout of your kitchen can improve the flow and function of the kitchen. It can give more storage and counter top space and of course make the kitchen look bigger. Simple changes like eliminating pantries and wall ovens if they are not necessary will have a big impact.

Basement Finishing - Design and Layout of Electrical Systems

In my last article we had finally arrived at a point in your remodel for designing. The plumbing should be marked out and perhaps even being installed. Now is the time to decide on where you will need electrical outlets and lighting.

When it comes to laying out your outlets you really need to be knowledgeable with your local and state codes. Many states have adopted a uniform code with the rest of the nation but you should always check into. At minimum you should be able to reach a outlet with six feet of cord wherever you are on a wall. Also bear in mind that basements, bathrooms, and kitchens generally must be on Ground Fault Interrupter circuits. This will prevent shocks from faulty appliances or any water that may come in contact with your appliances or wall sockets.

A Ground Fault Interrupter is a device that is installed at the beginning of a circuit. This device constantly monitors the flow of electricity in said circuit and "trips" if there is any drop coming back to it. GFCI's work so quickly that if you are holding on to a faulty appliance that normally may cause you harm you should not sense anything but the power going off! They can be installed in your circuit breaker box or as a outlet on the wall. Another option you may consider during construction for safety is a GFCI extension cord.

A more recent adaptation to code in many areas is the Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. These are now required in the installation of bedrooms in new home construction and are recommended for retrofit into existing homes. These devices use more sensitive monitoring devices to sense a arc in the system wiring. These arcs may be from deterioration of the wiring over time, poor installation, or abuse of wiring such as rubbing in a door way. Arc Fault Interrupters are currently installed in the circuit breaker panel much like a GFCI is.

During the layout of your system plan for any wiring that must be ran through the flooring now. Also lay out any lighting. You will want to use many forms of lighting in your basement to produce a warm and natural glow. This helps eliminate the "cave" feel of some basement remodels. Once you have laid everything out call in your electrician for his stamp of approval and any recommendations he may have.

How to design Roof Truss layout and related Truss drawings

Roof trusses are widely used in residential and wood framed commercial projects. A roof truss is usually cost-effective and quick in construction than a roof framed with rafters. A roof truss is crafted from small pieces of lumber; it is then fabricated in a shop and after that set up at the site.
When we start designing a house we first create a truss layout which shows places where trusses will be fit in the roof, anticipated shapes of the top & bottom of the truss, plate heights and estimation of load on the trusses. A truss is normally designed to transmit dead and live loads to other members in the structure. With regards to new home construction, a dead load is the burden of static components like the truss itself, roof beams, roofing materials, sheathing and ceiling material. A live load is dynamic in nature, such as wind, snow, furniture, movable loads, etc. Trusses are crafted to prevent flexing and bending and are usually tied together with tooth like metal plates made from galvanized steel or metal.
The common truss contains parallel sides so as to have a nearly same pitch on both sides of a center point. A lot depends on the interior ceiling design and roof pitches of your home when designing a layout for roof truss. Roof truss design allows flexibility to change the interior space as the truss normally be placed on an outside wall, leaving the interior space free for you to design and decorate accordingly. Trusses come in a wide range of designs giving you a creative freedom to change the ceiling design!
