Model Railway Exhibition 2010 Pt 6

The 33rd model railway exhibition by the Mid Essex Model Railway Club on the 18th Sept 2010 at Shenfield High School. Exhibiter 29 is "Widnes Road" by Paul Smith in 4mm scale. "A finescale DCC layout, set in the North-West during the mid 1980's. Although a fictional scene, the concept is based on a small fuelling point, shed & small P-Way yard. Built to serve an off-scene marshalling yard for Runcorn & Widnes industrial complexes including ICI chemical works: inspired by visits to Warrington Bank Quay in the late 80's & 90's. The layout features scale length hand-built C&L turnouts & trackwork, with extensive use of model lighting. Stock is typically from the early 80's up to the introduction of 'large logo' blue & much is either resprayed or weathered; detailed & all stock is Kadee fitted." Exhibiter 30 is "Horsted Keynes" by Alan Brewster in N gauge. "A junction station on the line originally built from Lewes to East Grinstead, operated from 1882 by LBSCR up to 1923 when it became part of the Southern Railway. In 1948 it along with the rest of the UK was nationalised to become part of British Railways. Taking 10 years to build, the layout represents life in the 1950's & the atmosphere of that part of Southern England. The station now forms part of the Bluebell Railway. Stock is being developed to give a more accurate collection of that run on the line during the time modelled. Special trains run as part of the operations, depicting the latter days of the line before ...

Peterborough Model Railway Exhibition 2011 HD

This is my video log of the various Model Railway layouts that were at the Peterborough Model Railway Exhibition 2011 event this year. Thanks goes to all model railway clubs that granted me full permission to film their fantastic layouts. I think I have mainly filmed N gauge layouts as there wasn't many OO gauge model railways to film but I did manage to film a couple of O gauge trains as well which are impressive for detail and size. There is a couple of modern image layouts in N gauge that I found really impressive such as Shaweport, Dragonby and Newcastle-by-the-Water. Well here is the layouts shown in this order on the video. Uppingham: EM Gauge. This layout is quite a classic one as construction started some 35 years ago. It is based on a segment of the Rugby - Peterborough line and it is set in around the early 1900's which therefore makes it a steam era layout. Sadly though, nothing was running on the layout. So I only briefly filmed the scenery and then moved on. Shaweport: N Gauge This modern image layout is set in the mid-1990's right through to present day operations and it has a high density of rail traffic ranging from DMU's to HST's as well as various types of Freight to keep things interesting. This layout has not one but two N gauge Class 92's that are from CJM models. Other freight was hauled by Dapol Class 66's, Graham Farish Class 60's, Dapol Class 58 with Passenger trains with Class 90's, Class 87's and Class 86's with DMU's such as the Class 150 ...

Warley Model Railway Exhibition 2009 Part 2

Here is second part of the three part video from the Warley Model Railway Exhibition event that was held on the 21st and 22nd of November 2009 at Birmingham NEC. All footage in this video was filmed on the 21/11/2009 and the video starts off with the Bachmann/Graham Farish N gauge layout that was shown on the Bachmann Stall but unfortunately the locomotives were not running for some odd reason. This is probably because there was no power available to the tracks or the controller cut off, but the locomotives seen on that layout was a Class 47 in BR Blue and a Class 66 that is 66152 in DB Schenker Livery (I am seeking the Dapol version for my layout). Next up we have a British Classic Steam-based OO gauge model railway layout which starts off with a BR Green Class A1 that hauling Maroon-coloured BR MkI carriages which then a BR Coal Sub-Sector Class 37 returns southeast-bound with a similar train rake of carriages but a shorter length. Next up I film a British N gauge layout which starts off with a LMS freight locomotive hauling a granite train, followed up with a LNER freight train that heads eastbound. This layout also has some impressive sound effects as well such as locomotive sounds but these are not DCC sound as I assume it is played from a sound system. The next layout is another steam-based N gauge layout but there was electrical problems with this layout so I cut the filming short as my memory cards were getting full. The next layout is somewhat unique because it ...

Model Railway Train Layouts

There has been a lot of talk about what you should choose for your first model railway train layout. Should a beginner use sectional track or flex-track? How should they go about a layout design? I hope to answer these questions.

Personally, I think you need to go with a layout that you are comfortable with. There are quite a few good books out with layout designs. Atlas makes several that are aimed at beginners. Some books I think you should get:

HO Primer and (All aboard)

The Practical Guide to HO Model Railway Trains, both by Kalmbach Publishing.

Six HO Railroads YOU Can Build is another good book with helpful info for getting started. It is published by Atlas (Tool Co.).

The HO Model Railroad Handbook is also a good resource. It is written by Robert Schlieicher and published by Chilton Book Co.

But the magazine that got me started was Model Railroader by Kalmbach, I also tried out Railroad Modeler and wasn't that impressed. Basic books by Kalmback such as the one listed and many more are available by Kalmback I do belive one is called my first layout, also check out there annual special magazines such as Track planning 2001, and their "Great Model Railroads 2001" if you can find the 20000 issues or older ones go for it and just read up. I also talked to the Hobby store owners such as if your in the Milwaukee Wi area talk to Dreamers, Greenfield News and Hobby, Terminal hobbyshop (aka Walthers), and in Waukesha Jetcos Hiawatha. All these places will steer you in the right direction.

Flextrack

If you are uncomfortable with using flextrack, and don't feel you have the ability to design a track plan, with the associated wiring, then one of the layouts in these books might be just the ticket for what you want to do. The Atlas books have proven plans that WILL work, and they are designed for sectional track. They also include wiring diagrams that are easy to follow.

If you feel you have the ability to go with more advanced methods, by all means, go for it! If you run across anything that you have a problem with, make sure you check the internet.
