Website Design and Layout - Important Rules For Success

When it comes to the design and layout of your website, attention to detail will make all the difference. First of all, make sure that you don't use excessive banner advertisements. This will clutter up the page and make your site too "busy". One or two smart looking banners that complement the layout and colors of your site will be fine.

Also, stay away from complicated flash based menus. If your visitors get confused, they will leave your site in a heartbeat. When  your website visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. Don't confuse your visitors because confusion means clicking the back arrow!

Be careful about using audio on your site. If you do use audio, make sure your visitors have some control over the player-- volume or muting controls are a must. Returning visitors are easier to convert into paying customers because the more often they return to a site, the more trust they have in that site. So make sure that you have useful content that brings them back again and again.

If you start a forum, be aware that you are providing your visitors a place to voice their opinions and interact with their peers about anything. Even your website. This is a great way to build a following of devoted "fans" of your forum that will spread the word on and off the "net." Carry out polls or surveys. This is a good way to know exactly what your visitors want, need, like and dislike. Don't make it corny; make it interesting or controversial enough so that they will want to participate.

The most important thing that you can do is update your website frequently with fresh, up-to-date content. Layout a plan on the calendar as to when you will be updating and stick to the schedule. Website design and layout is not rocket science. Just use common sense and you will be fine.

Website Blunders - Do Not Put "Under Construction"

When you are getting ready to open your Internet website avoid sending users to the site before it is ready. Using the "under construction" front page gives potential customers a poor image of your business. They may think that you are not in business or that you went bankrupt. The use of the "under construction" page can undermine your credibility and cause people to give your business a bad reputation.

Another problem with using the "under construction" page is that you will potentially harm your inclusion in search engines. This could cause long-lasting problems when you are ready to open your web business.

Instead of using these types of signs opt for placing your web site on line immediately. If you are unprepared to put the site up you should wait to get your site until you are ready. Any web site is better than none. So if you must start using your site you can at least put up a banner or abbreviated web site that can give more information about your business. Give a clear statement about what your business does and let the users know a little about your background and when the full site will become available. Use some keywords in your short site and make it similar in style and color to what your full-blown site will look like.

Better yet is to be prepared with your website as soon as you get it. You can easily prepare your website ahead of time so it just needs to be downloaded when the time comes. There are many web site programs that can be used. If you are unfamiliar with using them you may want to enlist the help of a qualified web site designer. They can help you choose a layout, colors, navigation and graphics. They will help you determine the best links to use and what content to put on the site. Some will even supply professionally written copy for inclusion on your site. Using a professional will help to ensure that all the links work and that the site doesn't take too long to load.

To make sure that you don't get stuck with an "under construction" sign talk to your website host company. Ask them not to mark the site as active until a specific date that you agree to. That way you can have time to design your web site before taking it online. Be open to changes. Once your site is active always test it to be sure that all the links work properly.

Which Asian leader has best website?

By Alastair Lawson BBC News Nepal's Prime Minister Prachanda has formally launched a new website that contains forthcoming engagements, policy announcements and Maoist party news. How does Prachanda's site compare with those of other South Asian leaders in terms of layout and design? The BBC asked Keith Black, senior web consultant of Turboweb Limited - a UK-based company which designs websites around the world for politicians and businesses - to give his assessment. NEPAL PRIME MINISTER: Interesting use of colour, although a bit bold, we thought. Still a few unfinished elements too which can make a site look a little unprofessional. The English language tab at the top doesn't seem to function yet and there is no contact form or noticeable contact details either. Nice use of light boxes in the gallery section though. www.cmprachanda.com Overall score: five out of 10 PAKISTAN PRESIDENT: Slightly dated design and seemingly most of the site still under construction - clear navigation though on the left hand side. News section is kept fairly up-to-date. But again no visible method of contact through the site. www.presidentofpakistan.gov.pk Overall score: four out of 10 AFGHAN PRESIDENT: Very user-friendly, good contact details and helpful clickable links. But in-depth contact details of Afghan embassies around the world suggest the site may be more geared to an international or expatriate audience. Frequent use of American spelling suggests site may well have been developed ...
